Ditch That Car

Ditch that Car

If you live in an urban or suburban area where you can do without your car - go for it. If you live in the country this may be a little harder but you can always go half way.

Bicycles

When your weather is great and you don't have to travel to overly far to get to work, think about cycling. This alternative of course has several advantages such as no gas money, no pollution, and you have the health benefit to boot. On days of inclement weather this might not be the best alternative, but on those nice sunny days, go for a ride.

Walking

OK, this really is only a great choice if you live fairly close to work, but if you do have that luxury, take a walk. The benefits are the same as for cycling. My dad walked to work almost every day of his working life.

Public Transportation

It's there so you might as well use it. Most urban areas have light rail, trolleys, busses, or a combination of the above. Usually when you are choosing public transportation you are using a hybrid of different modes of transportation. If you take the bus you may be walking to the bus stop or to work from the bus stop. In some places you can ride your bike and affix it to the front of the bus to go greater distances.

Most urban areas have park and ride lots where you park your car and finish your journey into town on light rail or bus.  This is a good hybrid alternative for those who live in the suburbs or in the country but work in the city.
