Choosing Green Appliances

When choosing green appliances we are looking primarily for appliances that use less electricity and less water.

When you are looking at an item such as a refrigerator you can check out the yellow and black Energy Star Label. This will tell you the actual cost of operating the appliance.  Sometimes you will see that in the long run a more expensive model may save you money over time.

Front loading washing machines are generally quite a bit more expensive but use less water and energy. The difference in cost may be recovered over the life of the appliance. Dryers with moisture sensors save money by stopping the dryer when the clothes are dry. The most energy efficient clothes dryer is a clothes line.

Water heaters use quite a bit of energy.  they have to keep that tank full of water hot at all times. This can get expensive if you have a large water heater. Tankless Water Heaters save money and are more energy efficient than tank type water heaters. Tankless water heaters guarantee endless hot water.

Some basic thoughts about refrigerators. Side by side models use more energy than top or bottom freezer models. If you can find a manual defrost unit they use less electricity. Models with ice and water dispensers on the door are less efficient than those without. And of course larger means more energy.
